Beta Xi Chapter Info
Academic Standards
Kappa Kappa Gamma is dedicated to promoting strong scholastic achievement. The credit value of courses at UT-Austin is expressed in semester hours. To be eligible for initiation in the Beta Xi Chapter, a new member must be registered for at least 12 hours of coursework during the semester in which she is initiated and earn a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00.
To continue as an active member of the sorority, she must earn at least 12 semester hours of passing credit each semester and earn an overall GPA of at least 2.75 per semester. Members who fall below this minimum standard are first assigned to a “Period of Support” during which the Academic Excellence Committee helps the member advance academically. If the member’s GPA does not improve she is assigned to a “Period of Concern.”
Recruitment Information
Recruitment is our most important event of the year. Recruitment Workshop usually begins the second week of August followed by Recruitment, which involves a week-long series of parties ending in Bid Day. Note: Recruitment dates are announced in the spring to allow members and their families to schedule jobs and vacations that do not conflict with Recruitment Workshop or Recruitment.
Attendance is mandatory for all events related to Recruitment. In limited circumstances, absences are excused. Excuses must be submitted in writing and deemed acceptable by the Membership Adviser and chapter officers. Vacations and summer jobs are not acceptable excuses.
Personal Conduct
Kappa Kappa Gamma is an international organization of women that recognizes the value of friendship, mutual support, and allegiance to positive ethical principles. During the new member period, each new member agrees to uphold the fraternity’s bylaws, standing rules, and policies. As citizens and students, Beta Xi members are subject to local, state, and federal laws as well as to the rules and regulations of UT-Austin. Failure to meet these obligations makes a member subject to disciplinary action or dismissal from membership in Kappa Kappa Gamma.
The Standards Committee within each chapter educates members regarding our fraternity’s standards, expectations, and rules.
Hazing is strictly prohibited. Hazing is defined as any activity or action—with or without consent of the individual involved—that produces mental, physical, or emotional discomfort; embarrassment; harassment; or ridicule. Any new member, active, associate, or alumna member of Kappa Kappa Gamma failing to comply with this policy is subject to disciplinary action by the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity Council.
The use and possession of alcohol is strictly prohibited on all Kappa property. This includes not only our chapter house but also our parking lot. This is a fraternity rule and applies to all Kappa Kappa Gamma chapters.
Fiscal Responsibility
It is each member’s individual responsibility to pay all membership dues and fees in a timely manner. These fees are itemized in the fees brochure all members receive before the start of each semester. If a member lives in the house, she will also be billed for room and board as outlined in her housing contract.
Kappa Kappa Gamma is a non-profit organization that relies heavily on the timely collection of each member’s membership dues, fees, and, if applicable, room and board. These funds are critical to the smooth operation of the house and to the continuation of chapter programming.
Members’ families will be emailed an invoice from Billhighway.com at the start of each semester. Payment for the entire semester is expected on receipt of this invoice. In certain circumstances, a payment plan can be arranged through the Chapter Treasurer. In this case, the full amount is divided into three payments within the semester, and the entire sum must be paid before the conclusion of the semester. Late fees are added to all unpaid, overdue bills.
Note: Graduation from the university or resignation/dismissal from the sorority does not erase a member’s debt.
